All you need to know about Fatoumata Tambajang; Gambia’s new female Vice President

1. Fatoumatta C.M. Jallow Tambajang was born on October 22 1949 in Brikama, a trading town in The Gambia.

2. She is a mother of eight children and schooled in Gambia, Dakar and France.

3.  She chaired the National women’s council and brought about empowerment programs for the women, supported the enacting of a marriage bill discouraging early marriage and female genital mutilation.

4.  She worked as special adviser on women’s affairs to Gambia’s first President.

5.  She has always stood for gender balance and equality.

6. She was a victim of a hostage situation in 2001 whilst working in the African Great Lakes.

7.  She served as the Secretary of State for Health and Social Welfare from 1994 to 1995.

8. She resides in Kanifing District.

9. She was appointed Vice President by President Adama Barrow on January 23 2017.

10. She was nonetheless later found to be ineligible because she at 67 exceeded the 65 year old max age range for a Vice President.
